Analysis of people’s perception on the the attack of Naxalites on Congress Convoy

On 25 May 2013, Naxalite insurgents of the Communist Party of India (Maoist)attacked a convoy of Indian National Congress leaders in the Darbha Valley in Sukma district of Chhattisgarh, India. The attack caused at least 27 deaths, including that of former state minister Mahendra Karma and Chhattisgarh Congress chief Nand Kumar Patel and has been termed as an attack on the Indian democracy by Rahul Gandhi, Vice President of the Indian National Congress.

The big question is: “What are the sentiments of masses on this Maoist attack�?

Here are the key findings of the people’s perception based on the sentiment analysis performed using myRosys:

• After the analysis of the posts on Naxalite attacks on the social media, we found that 67 (15%) posts across the social media were made with positive sentiments maybe because of the sympathy people have towards the naxalites as they are aware why these people became naxalites in the first place. While 274 (63%) posts had negative responses as the average Indian was angry with Government’s inability to control Naxalism. 92 (22%) posts had a neutral tone towards the attacks.
• Analysis of social networks clearly showed that users on Facebook (91 posts) were not as active as Twitter users(210) or Google Plus users(132) for that matter.

Detailed results of the people’s perception of the sentiment analysis performed by myRosys:

• Post Analysis:

As it can be seen from the results, there were virtually no posts about maiosts on various social media networks till 25th May but after the attacks there was an exponential increase in the online traffic with respect to these attacks with Twitter leading the pack.

• Who are the Social Influencers with respect to these attacks: We call those accounts as social influencers, whose posts have gained the maximum popularity across social media. Popularity is represented in terms of likes, shares and retweets.
