Has Life became better or worse with Social Media?
Let’s go a few years back to the eventful year of 2004 – the birth year for both Orkut and Facebook. It was a time, when we got a nice alternative apart from traditional emails and a perfect excuse to login to our Orkut and Facebook accounts, though it was restricted by seniors and teachers from using in the computer labs, considered like wastage of time and bashed by our parents and teachers. It was like a newly found love, a crazy excitement or probably an addiction for most of us that we never minded putting aside a few hours for it.
If we realize what we have in store for us in this the expanding social media age, it is hard to believe the way it has dominated our lives. Every social media channel has its own positives and negative effects. Earlier we had a mere two or three social media channels, now we have hundreds of them compete against each other to capture their presence over the internet. The terms face booking, tweeting, pinning, stumbling and tumbling have gradually been added as new verbs in our daily life. No matter what people say, feel or do in social media, the fact remains true that it is very addictive and has a deep effect on our psychology. Social media has revolutionized the way we communicate and connect with people. We can discover our friends with ease even after many years without the need of going through those old slam books or tracking their ever changing phone numbers and addresses. We like to express our love for our country, alma mater, role models, favorite brands, celebrities, authors, artists and the list is endless. Like a magic photo album and sharing, we post our pictures instantly just seconds after it has been taken, share and recollect those special moments that only we know the best. In this information age, social media has become a powerful channel to get the latest updates of particular interests and create a buzz about absolutely anything right from trivial & silly jokes, celebrity gossips, movie reviews to the extreme environmental issues, women rights, revolutionary political agitations, and movements so on and so forth. Many times we put our frustrations and opinions on a social media page, post out dissatisfactions for a poor service of our favorite brand, movie experiences and even the traffic woes.
On the flip side, social media has given us a secret weapon to ratify a person’s details simply by checking their profiles and details like a secret detective agency to know more about their personal life happenings. A craving to know what’s going on in the personal life of your best friends or acquaintances often ends up with comparing your live with them and constant desire to get better popularity despite the fact that their profile may or may not reflect their true reflection of life. It is simply foolish to be sad if someone else is more popular in social media or doing better in life than you. Since everyone has an option of choosing what they want others to know about them so hardly anyone will ever reveal their true autobiography on social media. It would be wrong to categorize use of social media as good or bad because we have the power to choose and customize it the way we like it. As rightly said, Life is what you make of it and social media is just a medium to express yourself just like any other communication channel. So make the best use of it, stay well connected, be happy and keep smiling!
