Social Media Marketing- A new wand in the hands of marketers
Four years ago, there were struggling computer engineers who have low grades and unemployed due to the hard hit recession. All they did was checking emails, updating Facebook statuses and messing up Wikipedia entries. In a playful way they started dealing with computer spare parts and selling out used computers on a discounted price rates. They developed a platform where a consumer, who aspire to buy a used PC, Laptop and computer accessories and a retailer, who can source and sell the same. They created their own website and started promoting it on Facebook at a reasonable price for gaining popularity. The business broke even in two years and to everyone’s disbelief, they became entrepreneurs.
This is just an instance of what a social media platform can do. Integrating social media marketing with your business and creating an ecosystem where customers can interact with brands, post their opinions and interests online. Customers, despite suspicious security policies love social media, they interact with the brands they like, follow influencers they love and if they are dissatisfied with a brand, they are at liberty to publicly reflect the same. Social media provides a platform to connect friends around the world and also gives an opportunity to brands to interact with customers, understand their interests, target potential customers and also make necessary changes to the product strategy and portfolio to improve sales, gain popularity and to address issues or concerns of the customers as and when they occur.
For example, consider the case of LiveChat on Twitter, Hangout sessions on Google and following influencers on LinkedIn. It all started with Steve Jobs who, despite being a CEO interacted with customers of all sorts and addresses their queries personally using available media platforms. Similar approach was adopted by today’s influencers like Eric Schmidt, who offered help to his friends to adapt Android, Richard Branson, who is happy to brand Virgin on social media platforms. They took an approach to engage users using social media platforms as a marketing tool and engaging customers to build high brand recall value. This same social media marketing approach was adopted by startups like Flipkart.com, Zomato etc. to rise funds by attracting foreign investors and turn Indian Billion $ dreams into a reality.
Startups across the world integrate social media marketing plans before incorporating the project. This shows how influential a simple Facebook page or a Twitter feed means to an organization in this information intense world. They not only attract customers without moving an inch, they could also attract angel investments and partnerships in the same manner.
