Analysis of people’s perception on the floods in Northern India

Monsoon rains arrived nearly two weeks early and gave people some relief from the summer heat but unfortunately the same heavy monsoon rains triggered floods which have swept away buildings, roads and vehicles in the state of Uttarakhand. The neighbouring state of Uttar Pradesh has also been hit. And very recently the floods hit the low lying areas of Delhi. Although Kedarnath temple survived the flash floods but the whole area surrounding the temple has been washed out by the floods.

The big question is: “How deeply have these floods hurt the citizens across India? What are the sentiments of masses on social media?�

Here are the key findings of the people’s perception based on the sentiment analysis performed using myRosys:

• Post Analysis

The fact that 49% posts on social media were made with negative sentiments says it all. 796 posts were negative as the public sentiment is low because of the fact that the casualties in northern India have not only hurt those people who lost their loved ones but every citizen of India.

• Noise analysis performed by myRosys:

myRosys monitored social media responses around floods in all the major social media networks and found:

Analysis of social networks clearly showed that users on Facebook (713 posts) were the most active and were posting three times more than Twitter users (294 posts). Google Plus (712 posts) users were also very active with respect to the floods.
